The part-time program is a direct extension of the full-time program in that the same knowledge is taught in a less intensive manner. Part-time classes are open to everyone who is interested, from beginners to serious artists. We will be offering evening classes in portrait drawing and painting, figure drawing and painting, still lifes, casts, and landscape painting.

We offer seminars and workshops, from time to time, featuring some of today’s best contemporary representational artists from around the world.

Please check back periodically to see schedules and times or join our email list to stay informed of announcements and events.

Past Part-Time Classes

Cast Drawing January 1 - February 19, 2018
Cast Drawing is a core part of training here at GLAFA. Using plaster casts made from molds of respected sculptures throughout history, a cast drawing is a finished, comprehensive study of three-dimensional object as observed from life. Using controlled lighting allows for consistent observation over multiple sessions of drawing, and the lack of color in the casts allows for a robust training in the study of values. Creating a finished cast drawing is challenging, but students in this class will see their draftsmanship ability improve significantly in a relatively short period of time.

Limited to 12 students. $275

Portrait Class January 2 - February 20, 2018

In Portrait Class, students will work directly from a live portrait model with the intention of creating an accurate likeness to the sitter. A total amount of five hours, over two classes will be spent on each pose before proceeding to the next. Learning to simplify features, understanding structure and proportion, and becoming familiar with basic anatomical knowledge while holding true to the visual impression will be the main goals of this class. Students with little artistic experience are encouraged to use graphite or charcoal on paper, while more experienced students may use their preferred medium of choice.

Limited to 12 students. $275

Bargue Drawing January 3 - February 21, 2018

The Bargue Drawing class uses a curriculum developed by Charles Bargue, a respected 19th-century artist and teacher. Focusing primarily on learning to see shapes, values, and edges accurately, the course follows a systematic progression from simple line drawings to far more complex studies. This class is highly recommended for beginners or those wishing to build a solid foundation of technical skill from the ground up. — at Great Lakes Academy of Fine Art.

Limited to 12 students. $275

Foundations Class January 4 - February 22, 2018

The Foundations Class is a survey course showcasing the core lessons taught during the full-time students first year. A general introduction to drawing as well as explorations into Bargue and Cast drawing will all be practiced in this class. Ultimately, all of these lessons come back to the same core objective: training the eye to see accurately. Recognizing and translating observed shapes, values, and edges is the cornerstone of the GLAFA program, and of this class. Recommended for beginners or those interested in getting a taste of the GLAFA first year, full-time instruction.

Limited to 12 students. $275
